It may come as little surprise to many people, but deformed and mutated fish, shrimp and crabs have begun to appear with increasing regularity in the catches of Gulf of Mexico fishermen. More than two years after the devastating BP oil spill, Al Jazeera reports that fishermen have caught fish with lesions on their bodies and other deformities, while they have also caught shrimp that lack eyes and underdeveloped and deformed crabs in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. BP denies any link between these reported irregularities and the massive oil spill that occurred in 2010. The BP-operated Deepwater Horizon oil well spilled more than five million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The accident cost the Gulf region billions of dollars in revenues, and also killed eleven workers.
Although the fishing and tourism industries in the Gulf region have bounced back, demonstrating the resilience and determination that have long defined America, apparently the marine life in the Gulf may take years to recover.
